As a designer, I discovered that story had the power to eliminate my imposter syndrome. And when I felt lost in life, I found my professional art and story tools could empower my therapy sessions and reveal a deep sense of purpose.

Now I help storytellers, entrepreneurs, and personal development advocates identify, fictionalize, and rewrite their personal narratives so they can become protagonists in their own lives.

JESSIE KATE BUI
STORY DEVELOPMENT NERD
As an aspiring designer, I struggled to deal with my own process challenges and imposter syndrome. And as a professional with an inconsistent process, I struggled to stabilize my work. When I developed my own techniques to create a reliable design process, I thought I had cracked the code.
OBSESSIVE THUMBNAILER
My insights led to working at one of the most prestigious design schools in the nation and the publication of a highly acclaimed educational design process book that was already being used to train students and professional artists...I had everything I needed to succeed! Right?...But my personal life was still in crisis.
NARRATIVE HEDGERIDER
In the midst of the pandemic, I was anxious, and having anxiety attacks as buried emotional trauma starting coming up to the surface and interfered with my home life. Unless I addressed it, I risked compromising all the progress I had made in my professional life as well. With the right support, in my darkest moments, I found a holistic storytelling and design methodology that tackled both my profession and emotional challenges at the same time.

past mentee reviews

I learned many creative strategies for brainstorming, exploring ideas, and a hardly ever present self-compassionate approach during the creative process.

As someone who enjoys research, Jessie really taught me the value of being intentional and specific with it to help bring a bigger picture together.

I've never actually had a class before that guided me through the very beginning of stumbling upon and developing an idea to the ending portions where things become more and more refined, and it's more about just adding the little finishing touches

professional reviews

Jessie Kate is a natural when it comes to everything storytelling, narratives, and understanding the psychology of storytellers to help them find their voice and share their stories. Her approach is nothing short of genius, and I highly recommend her!

HILARY HARTLING, BRAND AND MESSAGING STRATEGIST, FORMALLY VICE PRESIDENT OF INTEGRATED MARKETING AND SYNERGY AT WALT DISNEY MOTION PICTURES

I was a character designer at Disney for four years until I left to start my own online art school, The Oatley Academy of Concept Art and Illustration (now the Oatley Academy of Visual Storytelling).

I first met Jessie Kate at an animation convention called CTN-X where I was floored by her strength of draughtsmanship, but even more so by her communication skills and her confidence.

She is an articulate but efficient communicator. She has a knack for clarifying abstract ideas with words and clear direction.

When our Academy decided to take on a large group book project, I assigned Jessie Kate to the role of a costume design lead...little did I know that there was a focused, organized, motivational producer-art director hybrid inside of her.

She did an amazing job organizing, moving that project forward, and bringing the team together. The level of productivity, organization and patience that she maintained throughout the project blew everyone away.
...and gave everyone a sense of stability that would have otherwise been disconcertingly absent.

The project didn't have a single, established organizational leader at the beginning but when a need arose, the team just automatically turned to Jessie Kate.

...but it gets better.

Jessie also blew us away with an in-depth, inspiring style guide and design concepts worthy of any ILM or Henson production (which is exactly what we were going for).

I have worked with and hired a lot of creative professionals throughout my own career. Jessie Kate's skill set is a unique hybrid of creativity and efficiency.

It’s a rare feeling of relief that comes with knowing that all you have to do is share the vision of an end result for a project and trust that the person to whom you're assigning the task will see it through. Jessie Kate is that person.
